AbScent is the UK support and research charity for smell disorders, offering the best support and information so that no-one faces anosmia alone. We do this with a range of online services providing support and interaction, trusted and accessible information, and practical resources to manage life with little or no sense of smell. We now have a combined online community of 40,000 people from all over the world, but we know there are thousands more that need support.
We’re looking for a Communications Officer to join our small, committed, passionate team, and help propel the charity to the next level and beyond.
As the Digital Marketing and Communications Officer, you will be responsible for presenting AbScent to the outside world, attracting beneficiaries, donors and supporters to engage with our work.
Working with the Executive Director, you will develop and deliver a communications plan to engage donors and supporters as well as reaching the people who need our services. Creating content will use your copywriting and creative skills, but you’ll also be drawing on data and analytics to maximise the effectiveness of our comms.
Joining our current team of four, this role is hands-on with the freedom to manage your workload in the way you know you can best deliver results. A flexible approach will enable you to manage several projects simultaneously, respond quickly and decisively to new challenges and opportunities, while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.
The role is home-based - AbScent does not have an office yet - but you will be expected to attend regular meetings in central Hampshire. AbScent particularly loves to work with people who have lived-experience of smell loss, but empathy for the challenges of living with a sensory deprivation is a must.
We have an expectation that you will:
Demonstrable marketing and communications experience, including the use of market research, insight and analysis to identify and evaluate marketing activity.
Confident operating across digital and social media platforms, with experience of creating and delivering online campaigns.
Strong working knowledge of proofing, web copy editing and writing in keeping with SEO, usability and accessibility best practice.
Good working knowledge of information architecture (IA) and user experience (UX).
The ability to develop annual operational marketing plans and report on performance.
Experience of planning, prioritising and organising work, ensuring the effective use of resources and delivering to tight deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Great with people, able to influence and engage.
High standards for output, with good proof-reading skills and strong attention to detail.
Experience of marketing for a charity
The ability to create digital assets and content within brand guidelines
Experience with CMS
Proficient use of Google Analytics
Proficient use of Mailchimp
Proficient use of social media reporting tools such as Hootsuite, etc
Basic knowledge of press management
Understanding of the nature and impact of smell disorders.
Understanding of the importance of compliance with data protection legislation and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in the charity sector.
Knowledge of Google’s office suite.
Ability to work remotely effectively, using tools such as Zoom, Trello.com, etc.
